We didn’t go to an I-cubs game, but this would be a great place to go just before a game. Jess and I decided to split the nachos and wings. The wings were our favorite! The nachos were okay. I’m a fan of cheesier nachos, but the flavor on the meat was really good. The wings were meaty and had such great flavor. We got the rub and honey flavor and added their BBQ sauces. The Korean BBQ sauce is delicious!! Another place to add to our regular restaurants spots.
Another amazing happy hour location. It was one of the first hot days this year, so the patio was a must. We enjoyed cocktails of white sangria and the double black diamond martini. If you just make it for the drinks, it’s worth it! We shared the ranch onion rings and those were so good! I had the smoked salmon dip with toast and Jess had the beef sliders. All were delicious! Another restaurant to add to our happy hour rotations.
Happy hour at Eatery A is such a great deal! Half priced pizzas, beer, and wine. The menu changes, so it’s best to go often! At this time, I had a white wine with a pizza. The pizza I had was a take on a Cuban sandwich. Pork shoulder, coppa, spicy pickles and Dijon. Very good! Jess had the merguez sausage, red pepper, and crispy shallots. So far I haven’t had a bad pizza from Eatery A… And plan to go back many times! A nice day on the patio with a cold beer or wine sounds perfect!
One phrase…. “No corking fees!” Jess and I met for a late lunch and enjoyed a variety of food. I was indecisive on either the crab cakes or the poutine… My waitress, ever so nicely, suggested I just do both. And they were very good! Definitely ready for a nap after the two foods. Fried crab cakes and chees/gravy covered fries = nap time. Jess had the chicken mac & cheese and onion rings. Pretty simple, but now that we’ve had the cheese shop mac & cheese not much will compare!
This place is a must visit in Des Moines! I know it’s been a while since my last post, because I’ve been to the Cheese Shop twice since the first time. Jess and I met up with our friend Katelin for dinner. Good thing we met with Katelin because I was indecisive on what I wanted to eat and she wanted the same things as me! The best of both worlds. I had the special menu item macaroni and cheese. It was made with pork belly and butternut squash… Amazing! Then we split the pig and fig sandwich. It has such a great balance of flavors, made with La Quercia Prosciutto Americano, Fromager d’Affinois and fig spread. All on a La Mie ciabatta roll. Jess had their famous mac & cheese and added bacon. Let me tell you, it is the best macaroni and cheese I have ever had, besides the one I ordered. I can’t wait to go back and indulge in more cheeses and meals.
Our second restaurant was Burek, a Bosnian restaurant in Des Moines.
I ate the cevapi and Jess had the Greek gyro. The cevapi was a simple dish of beef sausages in pita bread with onion and sour cream. Simple, yet very delicious and a lot of food for just $7! The Greek gyro was filled with all the classics and a fork was necessary to finish, only $5. We were hoping to dine it, but they had a sign saying that they only accepted carry out orders at the time. We ended up taking it to the mall nearby and ate at the food court. Definitely not food to attempt to eat in the car… I’d like to try the Bosnian gyro next, basically the same but made with a different bread.
My friends parents had an amazing idea of going out to dinner with friends through the alphabet. They’d meet up once a month or so and go to restaurants they’ve never been. So now it’s our turn!
A = Alba – 524 E 6th St, Des Moines, IA 50309
On Monday’s, Alba has $5 burgers and select cocktails. My friend Jess had the white sangria and BBQ burger. The burger was cooked to her request (medium) and she said she’d give it a 4 (out of 5). I had the pickled cow burger. It was actually made with a pork burger, shiitake mushrooms, and scallions. I’d give it a 4.5. Very good flavor and cooked well. My cocktail was whiskey cocktail, but I cannot remember what all was in it. 🤗
We will definitely be going back!
